The UK government is banning the sale of T5 and T8 linear fluorescent lamps from February 1, 2024. This is the last in a series of bans aimed at removing high-energy fluorescent lamps from shop shelves in the UK.

Codonas Amusement Park

Codonas Aberdeen is an entertainment hub based in Aberdeen, Scotland, home to an amusement park, bowling alley, mini golf and more. As part of a continued partnership with CEF and xcite, Codonas utilised xcite fittings in a recent lighting upgrade around the site, as well as in the newly built Laser Tag area.

In order to provide an immersive experience for players, the “Battle Royale” arena is kept mostly dark, illuminated only by xcite BATTEN luminaires to ensure some visibility.

However, emergency TWINSPOT fittings were installed throughout, ensuring that players can make their way out of the building quickly and safely in the event of an emergency.

Also installed throughout the Laser Tag zone were xcite PANEL fittings. These were modified by the customer with coloured film, creating a stunning coloured effect in the waiting area.

Elsewhere in Codonas, DOWNLIGHTS were installed in the arcade rooms and bowling alley, delivering high quality illumination and ensuring customers have an enjoyable experience.

In addition, emergency EM BULKHEAD luminaires were fitted throughout the complex, allowing occupants to identify escape routes in the event of a loss of mains power or severe emergency.

With traditional gyms in a downward trend, due to those opting to work out at home, the success of O’Tooles Gym is in creating an environment and experience that is not possible to achieve in a home gym.

O’Tooles has positioned itself as the place to go for those hardcore gym-goers who need regular, intense workouts. Their vision was to create the ultimate professional atmosphere that could not be replicated at home.

A range of xcite LED fittings were installed throughout O’Tooles, to provide customers with a unique gym experience.

The new lighting system was bright and welcoming for new members, as well as creating a comfortable environment for existing gym-goers.

By replacing old fluorescent fittings that emit large amounts of heat with xcite LED luminaires which give off significantly less heat, this drop in ambient temperature becomes much more noticeable for gym-goers during particularly intense workouts. In the boxing ring it is imperative that light is even and low glare, to improve peripheral vision and help maintain focus while sparring.

Princess Elizabeth Hospital

Part of Healthcare Group Guernsey, Princess Elizabeth Hospital is the leading healthcare provider in the Channel Islands, and in order to provide the optimal conditions for staff and patients, a lighting upgrade was initiated throughout the hospital.

There were a number of issues with the legacy fluorescent lighting that needed to be addressed with the new system. In communal areas, such as corridors and stairwells, the lights were on at all times, so it was important that the fittings minimised energy consumption and reduced the time of use.

xcite Downlights were supplied for the patient communal spaces, such as waiting rooms and the building entrance. These discreet fittings provide a comfortable environment for visitors, while reducing energy usage.

In stairwells, xcite Bulkheads were installed. These energy efficient fittings were supplied with movement sensor options to ensure that the light is only used when it is needed, reducing energy costs for the hospital.

Stoke Mandeville Olympic Stadium

Stoke Mandeville Stadium and Guttmann Centre was first opened in 1969, hosted the Paralympic Games in 1984, and underwent a £10 million refurbishment in 2003.

In addition to the sports hall and gym, Stoke Mandeville Stadium has an onsite 50-room hotel designed for athletes and stadium visitors, the Olympic Lodge.

The hotel also boasts several meeting and conference rooms, making it the ideal location for corporate exhibitions and sporting events. As part of an upgrade to the Olympic Lodge as a whole, xcite luminaires were installed throughout the building.

In the living rooms, xcite DOWNLIGHTS were installed, significantly improving the level of illumination and creating a much more enjoyable experience for hotel guests.

The lobby area was also upgraded with LED downlights, proving an inviting entrance to the hotel, whether they are staying at the lodge or attending a meeting.

Conference rooms also drastically benefitted from the upgrade to LED, with the xcite PANEL delivering significantly improved illumination and uniformity, as well as a reduction in maintenance and energy costs.

The stadium itself was upgraded with xcite emergency lighting, using the xcite BLADE, ensuring that visitors and fans can quickly and safely identify exits and make their way out of the building in an emergency.

University of Essex

Full marks for the xcite lighting system upgrade at the new University of Essex International College.

The International College offers degree preparation courses for international students to allow them to progress on to study at undergraduate and postgraduate level at the university.

Operated by Kaplan International Pathways, the College, located in the Constable Building in the Colchester Campus, has students representing over 30 nationalities, and gives them a taste of University life before they begin their bachelor or masters course.

The Constable Building had previously been used as offices and training facilities, and underwent a major lighting upgrade to replace the old fluorescent fittings with xcite LED luminaires. As part of a target to lower energy consumption and reduce maintenance costs, the University was keen to make the switch to LED lighting.

LCA Controls

LCA Controls, a major supplier of electrical, control and instrumentation engineering solutions throughout the UK and overseas, has relocated to a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in North Wales.

LCA group wanted the new building to provide the ideal working atmosphere for office staff, as well as create a pleasant, welcoming environment for guests.

In the open plan office, to minimise glare and discomfort for employees working on computers for long periods, xcite Panels were installed. Fitted with an opal diffuser, the panel has been designed to create comfortable lighting for room occupants.

In the corridors and communal spaces, stylish xcite FRDs were fitted, complementing the visual design of the building to create a striking entrance for visitors and staff.

The combination of xcite panels and downlights meant that the new building reflected the ambition of LCA Controls.

Holiday Inn Express, Portsmouth North, part of the global chain IHG, is a modern 150-bedroom hotel situated close to the A27 in Portsmouth.

In external environments, ensuring that people feel safe and secure is crucial, and installing the right lighting is an integral part of improving security.

To ensure that the outdoor spaces were safe for guests and staff, xcite Floodlights were fitted around the exterior of the building, in a recent upgrade of the lighting system at the site.

High output floodlights were installed around the front and rear of the building. This ensured that staff and visitors feel safe as they enter and exit the hotel, but also provides sufficient light at the rear of the building, improving security overall.

In order to identify perpetrators and recognise faces, security cameras required the right lux levels around the building, to ensure that cameras are not over or underexposed. The support of the Tamlite Design team ensured that the the level of illumination improved clarity of the security footage, making the cameras more effective.
